Support from Schools and Councillors
As well as strong public support on Facebook, for our online survey (now closed) and petition, several community leaders are supporting our campaign to save Onchan Park.
Mrs Taylor, Headteacher at Sacred Heart School, Miss Wardle, Headteacher at Carlton Central Junior School, Miss Spencer, Headteacher at Carlton Central Infants and Nursery School and Mr Hillier, Headteacher at Parkdale Primary school have all supported our campaign by sending letters home to parents (CCJS newsletter) and allowing their school to take part in focus groups (see links to Sacred Heart focus group and Central Juniors focus group) and the pavilion mural competition. We have had close links to the local schools and they have shown concern for the future of the park.
At our Summer Fun Day Paddy Tipping, Nottinghamshire Police and Crime Commissioner, spoke on BBC East Midlands Today on 31st July saying
“I think the council know the strength of feeling, but an event like that brings people together, shows support for the park, and I hope the council listen *very* carefully to local opinion.”
Nottinghamshire County Councillor, Jim Creamer has also spoken up to say that he is “opposed to urban cramming”.
Paul Wilkinson and Nicki Brooks, Councillors for Carlton Ward are judging the pavilion mural competition. Paul has this to say:
“My ward colleague Cllr Nicki Brooks & I have made it very clear that we support a community based solution for Onchan Park & are actively supporting the Friends of Onchan Park group in their efforts to find such a solution. We do not want to see this valuable local amenity to be lost, even partially, if there is any possibility of avoiding it.”
