Mission statement:
The Friends of Onchan Park aim to work with the local council to transform the park into a well- equipped, modern, sustainable and accessible area for the benefit of the whole community over many future generations.
Background: The Friends of Onchan Park formed in 2016 in response to threats of park redevelopment. We are highly motivated group of volunteers, with limited time availability, but very passionate about our cause. Our initiatives as a group have had positive impact on the park: in conjunction with the land-owner, Gedling Borough Council, were able to secure funding for two high priority projects: a MUGA, and an accessible tennis table area. Our development momentum was disrupted by Covid and the funding/financial constraints that followed. We are very proud to have continued support from our local MP and councillors, local schools, and the wider community. All our activities and support are documented and publicly available through our website. All our research data is available in our research portfolio. To date, we have raised 10k from various donations and charity events at the park.
Our updated action plan (2024-2028), based on recent community consultation, identifies a range of additional projects, and their priorities, to continue improving the park and optimise its use by the local community. It is our ambition to work towards achieving Green flag status for Onchan Park in the next five years.
